About

GovTwit is the world’s largest directory of all facets of government on Twitter: state and local, federal, contractors, media, academics, non-profits and government outside of the U.S. You’ll find official government Twitter IDs as well as individuals from different agencies in the directory, and I’m confident you’ll also find folks tweeting great content about how to improve the “business of government.”

In addition to visiting the website, you can also join the Facebook fan page or follow GovTwit on Twitter, where directory updates will be tweeted as they are made.

Use the “Recommend Someone” button at GovTwit.com to request an addition to the directory.

History

In 2008, GovTwit founder Steve Lunceford was frustrated at how hard it was to find other public services professionals using Twitter. While some basic resources existed in various wikis or blog posts, there was no comprehensive listing of all facets of the government using Twitter. Launched in November 2008 with around 100 IDs, the GovTwit list has grown exponentially and will continue to grow through independent research as well as your submissions.

GovTwit v2.0 launched in the summer of 2009, and introduced a new look and feel for the directory, as well as new features. For more information on how to best use the latest version of GovTwit, visit the “What’s Changed” post on the blog.

Acknowledgements

The latest version of GovTwit is possible thanks to team Squeejee, the same folks who built and run TweetCongress.org. GovTwit is one of the first sites built using Squeejee’s Twitter directory platform called Floxee; thanks much to Wynn Netherland, Chris McCroskey and Jim Mulholland.

I’d also like to thank Luke Fretwell of GovFresh for a fantastic update to the logo and blog design in February 2010, and to Strategic Communications and Peter Hahn for their help with the first version of GovTwit, including research, updates and Strategic’s Ryan Schradin creation of the original GovTwit logo.

Can you add either a 911 or PSAP tag for 9-1-1 PSAPs in your directory listing. I am with @Deschutes911 and we are currently tagged with Oregon and State-Local. Thank you.

Shawn, I’ll consider adding (and greater granularity on local data via gps or zip is another upgrade I’d like).

Did you know the search bar also pulls from Twitter bios and tweets? Searching on 911 brings back a list of tweets on the left, and on the right it pulls back a list of IDs in the directory that have 911 in their bio.

I’ve tried to add in the past but give me an error

    Thanks!
